BESS A — 226 MWh / 60 MW

Kyustendil cluster — transmission-connected flagship

BESS A is ZiRi's utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System in Kyustendil, Bulgaria: 60 MW power and 226 MWh installed capacity (approximately 203 MWh usable), on a 110 kV transmission path. It sits in a co-located portfolio with grid access at two nodes, alongside complementary projects and dedicated infrastructure. The asset is designed for merchant optimisation (day-ahead, intraday, and balancing/ancillary participation where qualified), with operations aligned to the same revenue stack used on ZiRi's reference fleet. The project is in the permitting phase; timing follows ESO and permitting milestones.

Highlights

  • Scale: One of the largest independent BESS footprints in the region — economies of scale in build, O&M, and market access.
  • Grid: Transmission-level connection and cluster positioning next to scarce 110 kV capacity.
  • Market design: Bulgaria recognises storage under the Energy Act; IBEX products support arbitrage and balancing participation subject to rules and qualification.
  • Operator track record: Same optimisation philosophy as live large-scale BESS in the region (EPO-managed stack).

Market & revenue context

Bulgaria's power market combines rising renewable output with liquid day-ahead and intraday products. Large-scale storage captures spreads and, subject to access rules, contributes to balancing. No forward-looking financial numbers are shown on this public page.

  • IBEX: Day-ahead and intraday trading; see ibex.bg and products traded.
  • Regulatory: Storage is recognised as an asset class under national energy law; participation in specific services depends on qualification and contracts.
